Overview

PLA (Polylactic Acid) is the most widely used FDM material and our most affordable option. Derived from renewable resources like corn starch, it prints easily with excellent dimensional accuracy and a smooth, slightly glossy surface finish. PLA is the ideal starting point for visual prototypes, concept models, and design validation.

Key Properties

PLA offers good tensile strength (50-60 MPa) and stiffness, with a relatively low heat deflection temperature of around 55°C. Parts have a clean, semi-glossy appearance and hold fine detail well.

Advantages

  • Most affordable 3D printing material
  • Excellent surface finish and detail resolution
  • Wide range of colours available
  • Biodegradable and made from renewable resources
  • Very low warpage during printing

Limitations

  • Low heat resistance — deforms above 55°C
  • Brittle under impact — not ideal for functional parts
  • Degrades over time when exposed to moisture
  • Not suitable for outdoor or load-bearing applications

Common Applications

Concept models, visual prototypes, architectural scale models, display pieces, form and fit testing, educational projects, and low-stress decorative components.
